This is Part 2 of this write up, for you to fully understand how you can be prepared to eloquently handle salary discussions, and negotiate for the salary you need and want, you need to read Part 1 of it before continuing with Part 2, this is for you to maximally grab the whole idea in this well researched write up.
Take a look at these interview questions & answers and see how you can learn one or two things from them
Question: What is your salary requirement?
Answer:
It is my understanding that the pay range for this position (or this type of position in general) is N250K-300K. Due to my experience and qualifications I would be comfortable in the N275K-325K range. OR you could say, “Similar positions in this industry garner salaries in the range of N255K-320K and I definitely expect to earn a salary in the top of that range.
Question: We are prepared to offer you XYZ amount for salary, will you accept this?
Answer: Your offer appears generous; however, I would be willing to accept (state a slightly higher figure of N5-10K higher) and would be most happy to join your organization. If the interview denies this request and again offers the same amount, say, “thank you”, that is a very generous offer. An additional week of vacation or ability to telecommute one day per week (or per month) would really round out the package for me and allow me to accept your offer.
Question: Would you consider taking less pay than you made in your last job?”
Answer: I would really need to know more about the opportunity and your whole package before I can give you an answer to that question. My last job had extra perks that this job may not have. Basically, I need more information before I decide. While my highest career value is not money, it is important to me that I be fairly compensated for the work I do. I would be willing to listen to a fair offer based on what I bring to the position in the way of experience and education.
Opportunity is valuable to me, so I am always willing to look at the bigger picture. I would always want to be paid according to what I bring to the position, but would be willing to be somewhat flexible when it comes to naira.
Question: Can you name a salary range that you would require to take this job?
Answer: From the research that I have done it appears to be in the N60–70,000 range. Is that the range you had in mind? Based on my previous experience and education and the ‘going rate’ for this type of position, I would like to be in the mid to high 70s. Is that a range that fits with your compensation structure? I would need to know more about your salary structure and how often you review salaries as well as your entire package before I could discuss salary ranges. Could you provide me with more information before we discuss this subject?
Note: The amounts quoted here in the questions and answers above are assumed for basic salary and not annual salary. Your basic salary will be multiply by 12 (months) to get you the annual salary.
Remember! The unwritten rule is, “He who mentions money first loses.”Let the interviewer bring up the subject and then let him or her be the first to mention the Naira/Dollar/Euro/Pound amount, if possible.
Tips & Warnings
Never state a naira/dollar/euro/pound figure of what salary you need or that you want more than your previous salary
Always ask for more money, they will respect you for it
Always send a thank-you note to your interviewer
Always gets the job offer including salary and benefits in writing.
To Your Career success……..
